Carbon fibre. A carbon fibre woven material being impregnated with a polymer resin (brown). Once coated with the resin, the material may be laid into moulds. The moulds are assembled and placed under pressure and heat. This cures the polymer resin which results in the formation of a component in carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). CFRP is used in a variety of applications where low weight is vital and moderate structural strength may be tolerated. Examples include body panels of racing cars and aircraft. Structural components may be made by orienting successive layers of the material in alternating directions.
